JA Named Among "Best of Davos" Content at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting

Our WEF blog with an article by Asheesh Advani was named among the Best of Davos, a list of the top content from WEF Annual Meeting that brings together top leaders from NGOs, business, academia, and politics to discuss bold ideas that address the world's biggest challenges. What a thrill to be in such good company.

It all started as the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum got underway in Davos, Switzerland, on January 22, and JA was offered a slot on the WEF blog. Our article that offers five ideas for speeding up curriculum development and implementation led to significant sharing and discussion.

JA Alumna Elected to U.S. House of Representatives

Donna Shalala, just elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, former President of the University of Miami, former U.S. Secretary of Health & Human Services, and former JA student elevated a mid-size university in South Florida and made it one of the best in the United States.

"In many ways, " she says, "universities are small businesses." And it was JA that gave her that business experience.

"Much of my youth was spent around JA, and I actually did JA for four years. We built our own companies. We made a stool that everybody in my family still has!

"We were becoming entrepreneurs. We were learning every aspect of business, from building financial plans to marketing to designing the product to identifying who were were going to sell it to.

"I had a bunch of very successful companies as a young person. Only one failure, but I learned more from that failure than anything else.

"JA made a big difference in my life. It gave me confidence. It was an extraordinary experience for us, and the JA experience continues to shape young people for the future, and now, all over the world.

"I'm Donna Shalala. I am JA!"

Winners Announced for the JA Labs Innovation Fund, Fueled by Citi Foundation

The JA Labs Innovation Fund, funded by Citi Foundation, seeks to support organic innovation at JA locations (JA member countries, sub-national offices, and JA local areas) around the world.

In the first round of submissions, 57 ideas sought to harness each organization’s creativity, out-of-the-box thinking, and calculated risk-taking. Applications were judged on three core components: innovation, replicability, and youth impact.

Congratulations to the two winners:

  • Young Enterprise, UK: YE UK will partner with Apps for Good, a tech NGO that teaches young people how to design and build technology products that solve problems that matter to them. This technology will be embedded into JA learning experiences, with potential for further expansion across the UK.

  • JA of Northern California, USA (JANC): JANC will pilot a speed-mentoring and STEM-focused event for high school girls from at-risk communities, called S.H.E Leads (see intro video, below).

David Cunningham III Featured in New “I Am JA” Video

David Cunningham caught the entrepreneurial bug in fourth grade, when he first attended a JA Hong Kong Company Program trade show . . . and then kept going back, year after year, to see more student businesses.

While in high school, he started the first JA chapter at the Hong Kong International School and went on to build two JA businesses with unique, profitable products: a custom iPhone case ready in 15 minutes and origami-inspired recycled purses.

Today, David brings his entrepreneurial spirit to AAR Corp in Chicago—a global provider of innovative aviation services to commercial and government customers—where he develops novel solutions to problems by leveraging data analytics. Watch and see why David "is JA.”

JA Worldwide and SABIC Partner in Global Initiative for Education and Innovation

When SABIC, a global leader in diversified chemicals based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (KSA), went in search of a youth-serving nonprofit partner for its global initiative for education and innovation, JA Worldwide quickly emerged as the logical choice.

Known in the Middle East and North Africa as INJAZ, JA is the only NGO in full partnership with the KSA Ministry of Education, giving JA unparalleled access to Saudi schools and classrooms, where corporate volunteers deliver entrepreneurship and work-readiness programs.

Although JA Worldwide serves over 10 million students each year, that number represents only a fraction of young adults who are unemployed or underemployed in MENA and throughout the world. As a result, the two global organizations have signed an agreement to serve more than 100,000 additional students through jointly developed social-responsibility educational opportunities. In KSA, five programs that focus on developing career skills while solving social challenges will reach 90,000 students across 1,500 educational institutions. A global initiative, Lights of our Future,TM is also being developed and will reach over 11,000 students in 20 additional countries where JA and SABIC both operate.

Asheesh Advani, CEO of JA Worldwide (below, left), reflected on the new collaboration after the formal signing ceremony. “Our partnership with SABIC,” he said, “will harness our students’ natural desire to mix profitability with social good.”

Yousef Al-Banyan, SABIC Vice Chairman and CEO, agreed. “We focus our CSR efforts on activities that create social, environmental, and economic value, and also advance SABIC’s 2025 strategy goals and support Saudi Vision 2030. This educational and innovation initiative stems from our unwavering dedication to build caring community relationships.”
